The tallest and the heaviest bird alive today is the ostrich. Striding the plains of central and southern Africa , this massive bird can grow to 2.74 m tall and can weight 160 kg. However , it is not the largest bird that has ever lived. Dromornis stilt on another flightless giant , thrived in Australia about 15 million years ago. It reached 3m in height and weighed up to 500 kg.
