Hail is made up of layers of ice . This is because a hailstone has risen high into the coldest part of a storm cloud again and again.

Each time it rises , another layer of ice freezes around it until the hailstone is so heavy that it falls to earth. For a hailstorm to occur the top of the cloud must be colder than freezing level.
