Which Volcano destroyed an ancient Roman Town?

Mount Vesuvius rises above the Bay of Naples in southern Italy. In AD 79 this Volcano erupted and buried nearby Pompeii. The Volcano had been dormant for 800 years. Few people realized it was a volcano .
On 24 August, AD 79, Mount Vesuvius suddenly erupted . For 3 days , Pompeii,was bombarded with pumice and ash. About 16,000 people died.
