When was sugarcane introduced to Europe ?



Sugar – making started in India about 3000 BC. Alexander the Great took samples home to Greece . By the 8th Century, Arabs were making sugar in Spain and France.

Christopher Columbus took sugarcane from Europe to West Indies in 1493, and for many years sugar was an expensive luxury. In Tudor times it was used as a medicine.Gradually sugar plantations were established in many parts of New World.The sugar trade across the Atlantic Became very important.
