Why do trees get struck by lightning ?

When lightning flashes from a cloud to Earth, it takes the easiest path. It is attracted to the highest point in the area , and this is often a damp tree.
A lightning flash begins with a downward ‘leader stroke ‘. Air is very resistant to electricity, and the leader stroke is attracted to trees and high buildings. A tree offers a low resistance route to earth . tall buildings also attract lightning
