The Colorado Desert in the south – west of the USA has layers of rock which have formed over a period of about 1600 million years. The river Colorado and its tributaries has sliced these layers in the Grand Canyon and other nearby canyons.
The grand Canyon area is area is the only place on earth where geologists can study so many layers of undistributed rock and an almost perfect sequence of fossils. The ‘Granite Gorge ‘ at the bottom of the Grand Canyon is cut into rocks that from the base of most of North America .
