New material is added to the Earth’s crust by volcanoes. Much of the lava is molten material from the part of the Earth called the mantle , which lies beneath the solid crust. Some volcanoes are found on land , but many are located deep beneath the oceans where lava flows onto the seabed.
Most scientists believe that the area of the earth’s surface remains the same. So while material is being added to the crust at the junction of some plate, it is being lost at the junctions of others.
